In 72AD, the Emperor Vespasian broke ground on a structure that would become the most recognisable building in human history. The Colosseum took eight years to build, required 100,000 tonnes of travertine stone, and was constructed largely by Jewish prisoners brought to Rome after the siege of Jerusalem. When it opened in 80AD, the Emperor Titus marked the occasion with 100 days of games. 50,000 Romans filled its tiered seating. The engineering that made it possible — the arches, the vaulted corridors, the retractable awning system that shaded the crowd — was so sophisticated that architects are still studying it today.

Fire, earthquake, centuries of stone-robbers who stripped its marble facing to build Renaissance palaces — and still it stands.
