Temple of Jupiter — Baalbek, Lebanon

In the ancient city of Baalbek, Lebanon, stand six enormous columns — all that remain of one of the grandest temples ever built by the Roman Empire.

Dedicated to Jupiter, king of the Roman gods, the temple was built on an extraordinary scale. Its 54 Corinthian columns stood over 20 metres tall, while its foundations incorporated massive stone blocks weighing hundreds of tonnes.

Even today, the sheer size of these stones raises questions about how ancient builders managed to move and position them with the tools available at the time.

Over the centuries, earthquakes, changing empires, and the passage of time have reduced this once-magnificent temple to ruins. Yet its six surviving columns still tower above Baalbek, offering a glimpse of just how impressive the original structure must have been.

Nearly 2,000 years later, the Temple of Jupiter remains one of the most remarkable examples of Roman engineering and ambition.
